Post updated at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14:
Two people were seriously injured in a crash Sunday near Globe southwest of Lawrence, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash occurred at 1:35 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 56 Highway at East 550 Road.
A preliminary investigation found that an SUV and a truck that was hauling a trailer and hay bales were both westbound on U.S. 56. The truck slowed to turn southbound onto East 550 Road, and the SUV attempted to pass the truck and struck the trailer in the driver’s side door, according to the release.
“The SUV then entered the south ditch and rolled before coming onto its top. The truck and trailer entered the south ditch, struck a rock wall and caught on fire,” according to the release.
Other drivers in the area helped to get everyone out of the vehicles, according to DGSO.
“DGSO would like to thank several motorists who passed by and helped individuals involved,” according to the release.
Two people associated with the truck and trailer were taken to a Kansas City-area hospital for serious injuries, according to DGSO. The driver of the SUV and two children were checked at the scene and released, according to DGSO.
The roadway had closed but reopened as of 3:35 p.m. Sunday; however, deputies would need to close it again “so tow trucks can continue to remove vehicles from the ditch,” according to the release.
