Multiple roads will be shut down in the coming week for pavement improvement projects, block parties and festivals. Parts of U.S. 56 Highway will also go down to one lane, impacting commuters.
Here are the details, according to news releases:
U.S. 56 between Gardner and Baldwin City:
Starting Monday, Oct. 6, contractors will work on pavement improvement on eastbound and westbound U.S. 56 from about 10th Street in Baldwin City to South Poplar Street in Gardner. The Kansas Department of Transportation said drivers should expect delays.
“Project work is permitted Monday through Saturday during daylight hours,” according to a news release. “In areas where work is taking place, flaggers and a pilot car will direct traffic in limited 1-mile work zones.”
Work is expected to be complete in January 2026.
16th Street between Massachusetts and New Hampshire Streets:
Private contractors closed East 16th Street between Massachusetts and New Hampshire Streets starting Wednesday to work on 1601 New Hampshire St.
This work is expected to be complete by Nov. 14.
31st Street between Atchison Avenue and Iowa Street:
City contractors will institute single lane closures on West 31st Street between Atchison Avenue and Iowa Street starting Monday, Oct. 6 to work on concrete pavement. “(T)wo-way traffic along W 31st St. will be maintained at all times,” according to a city newsletter.
This work is expected to be complete by mid-December.
Ramp from McDonald Drive to Sixth Street:
Crews will close the McDonald Drive ramp to eastbound Sixth Street starting at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8 for pavement maintenance. The work is expected to be complete by 1 p.m. the same day.
Massachusetts Street between North Park and South Park Streets:
Massachusetts Street between North Park and South Park streets will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5 for Parks, Recreation and Culture’s Autumn Harvest Festival.
Neighborhood block parties:
The 3100 block of Ranger Drive will close between Saddlehorn Drive and Rockfence Place will close from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, for a block party.
The 800 block of West 27th Terrace will close between Alabama Street and Belle Haven Drive from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, for a block party.
