KU and Haskell students will host a tipi raising Wednesday in celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day.
The tradition of raising a tipi at KU for Indigenous Peoples Day took root in 2021.
This year’s event will start at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, on the lawn of KU’s Strong Hall, 1450 Jayhawk Blvd.
The holiday is on Monday, but KU is on fall break through Tuesday.
The tipi raising will be led by Miss Haskell, Angelina Giago, Oglala Lakota and Hunkpati Dakota, alongside members of KU’s First Nations Student Association. Light refreshments will be available.
Co-hosted by KU’s Office of Sovereign Partnerships & Indigenous Initiatives and the Indigenous Studies program, the raising will welcome all Jayhawks and tribal nations.
“Join us as we celebrate and recognize the contributions of our Native Nations represented on campus through the many partnerships and collaborative work of KU students, faculty, staff and administration who are tribal citizens!” the event page reads.
