Community members are welcome to gather at the Chabad Center for Jewish Life at KU on Sunday to celebrate the grand opening of the new center.

The grand opening will begin at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2 at the center, 1203 W. 19th St., with an hour of remarks and a ribbon cutting followed by live music, food, family-friendly activities and tours, according to a news release from the center.

RSVPs are requested but not required via an online form at buildkuchabad.com/grandopening.

The center held a groundbreaking celebration in September 2024 as construction got underway. Just more than a year later, the 10,000-square-foot space is ready to welcome guests.

The new center includes “a spacious student lounge, library, dining hall, wellness and mental health spaces, a magnificent Judaic mural, study and reflection areas, and the first commercial kosher kitchen in Lawrence – all designed to be both a ‘home away from home’ for students and a welcoming hub for the broader community,” according to the release.

“This moment is truly historic,” Rabbi Zalman Tiechtel, who directs the Chabad Center together with his wife, Nechama, said in the release. “For the first time, Jewish students and the community at large in Kansas will have a permanent, beautiful, and welcoming space built just for them – a place of warmth, meaning, and belonging.”
