Lawrence’s Veterans Day Parade will return Saturday to honor those who have served, and more events and free meals are planned in the coming week.
The parade will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, heading north on Massachusetts Street from South Park to Seventh Street, and will feature “local veterans of all services, color guards and assorted military vehicles,” according to a news release from the parade association.
The grand marshal will be Lawton Nuss, former chief justice of the Kansas Supreme Court.
Nuss attended KU on a Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps scholarship and commissioned as a Marine Corps officer in 1975, according to the release. After serving as a combat engineering officer with the Fleet Marine Force Pacific, he returned to KU to attend law school in 1979.

He practiced law in Salina for 20 years and was appointed to the Kansas Supreme Court in 2002, becoming chief justice in 2010, according to the release.
“He retired three years early from the Court so he could devote more time to help his fellow veterans,” according to the release. That has included helping to launch the Douglas County Veterans Treatment Court.
