The city is urging residents, business owners and visitors to “dream big” at a community visioning workshop to brainstorm the future of infrastructure, placemaking and economic revitalization in North Lawrence.

The North Lawrence Corridor Study Task Force, which the city commission established to incorporate local voices into the study and planning process, will host the upcoming workshop.

“Rooted in its independent spirit and proud history, North Lawrence has offered a mix of historic homes, family-run businesses, open land, and scenic views of the Kaw, the area reflects both deep roots and ongoing vitality,” per a city news release. “At the same time, its location across the river presents unique challenges for transportation, safety, and connectivity.”

By focusing on corridors — major transportation routes, such as North Second Street/U.S. 59 Highway — the study aims to examine the relationship among safety, mobility and land use.

“The study will explore opportunities for improved traffic flow, pedestrian and bicycle connections, flood resilience, and land use planning, with the goal of creating a roadmap that balances growth and preservation,” according to the release.

Such planning initiatives often lead to recommendations for infrastructure projects, rezoning or design plans, according to the NLCS Task Force webpage

The upcoming workshop will allow community members to guide the study’s direction by sharing their values and priorities for North Lawrence.

The visioning session will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at Woodlawn Elementary School, 508 Elm St.

City staff members are also tabling at the Woodlawn Holiday Art Market from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 at the school.
