The Barker Neighborhood Association will host a meeting on Wednesday about a 234-space parking lot proposed in eastern Lawrence that would serve an apartment complex about a mile away.
Lawrence developer Doug Compton is in the process of securing land on Ohio Street for student housing a few blocks from the University of Kansas. In conjunction, Adams Architects submitted an application to rezone the property at 1501 Learnard Ave. for a new parking lot serving students living at the apartments.
The largely vacant parcel was formerly the Sunrise Project greenhouse. Plans include tearing it down to pave a private, gated parking lot and adding extensive landscaping for privacy and video monitoring for security.
Students would be expected to park their cars in the lot and use a car service or other means to reach their apartments, around a mile away.

Lance Adams, Adams Architects principal, presented his firm’s plans at a previous meeting on Nov. 19, where some neighbors said the parking lot would offer no benefits to the neighborhood and risk pedestrian safety.
Proceeds from the sale of the lot would help fund rehabilitation of Liberty Hall in downtown Lawrence.
The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3 at Vintage Church, 1501 New Hampshire St. Adams will be present again for questions. East Lawrence residents are invited, but the meeting is open to the public.
The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission is set to review the rezoning request on Dec. 17.
Sunrise Project moved into the Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth St. in North Lawrence, earlier this year.
