Construction on Bob Billings to reduce road to one lane for multiple blocks

A City of Lawrence construction project that aims to increase safety for pedestrians, bikers and motorists while improving pavement and water mains will start on Bob Billings next week. The city expects this work to take a year.

Crews started prep for the improvement project in November. On Monday, Dec. 8, the city will reduce traffic on Bob Billings Parkway to one lane in each direction between Monterey Way and Kasold Drive.

All properties along this half-mile strip will still be accessible throughout the project, according to a city newsletter.

“Drivers should expect reduced speeds, shifting lanes, and periodic delays as crews move through different phases of work,” per the newsletter.

The city plans to fully reconstruct Bob Billings between Monterey Way and Kasold Drive, which will entail storm sewer upgrades and water main replacement along Bob Billings.

The city also plans to repair existing pavement on Bob Billings between Monterey Way and Wakarusa Drive.

With the aim of creating a safer and more efficient roadway, the city will also create a new shared-use path on one side of Bob Billings and reconstruct a sidewalk on the other. Crews will also repair curbs and upgrade ADA ramps where applicable.

See here for a full list of plans for the project along Bob Billings.

The city anticipates construction will last 12 months, which may change depending on weather or “unforeseen delays.”
