Lawrence High students win awards at 2D and 3D art competition

Four Lawrence High School students won top awards at a major art competition in Merriam this week.

LHS art teacher Todd Poteet said hundreds of students, parents and friends attended the 29th annual High School Visual Arts Competition’s opening reception Thursday night. Awards were announced at the event, held at the Tim Murphy Gallery in Merriam.

LHS students led the category for 2D art, with Wren Jay earning both first and second places and Kaiea Blum placing in third.

In the category for 3D art, LHS students Piper Journey and Jayden Moore each took home first and second places, respectively.

Students made their submissions in October, and an anonymous professional artist judged based on color or values, technique, form and presentation, according to the competition’s webpage.

Other high schools at the competition included Baldwin, Blue Valley, Blue Valley Northwest, Blue Valley West, De Soto, Lee’s Summit, Mill Valley, Olathe North, Olathe Northwest, Platte County, Spring Hill, Staley, Shawnee Mission North and Shawnee Mission South.

The show will remain open through Dec. 27 at the gallery, 6040 Slater St. in Merriam.
