Meet Queen Winter in her secret snowy kingdom, hand-dip beeswax candles to take home with you, make a fairy house or gnome home from clay and gemstones, or craft peg dolls from felt and wood, all under lots and lots of twinkling lights.

Prairie Moon Waldorf School’s most popular event of the year, the Winter Light Faire, has been a tradition in the Lawrence community for more than 20 years.

This old-fashioned, family-oriented holiday faire and open house features unique, handmade gifts from local vendors, live music from local musicians and a wide variety of hands-on activities both children and adults can enjoy.

A delicious Italian dinner will be available for purchase this year and served by the seventh and eighth grade classes. The fifth and sixth grade students will make and serve dessert.

This year’s faire will be in the afternoon instead of the traditional morning time. The faire opens at 3 and goes until 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 at the school’s campus, 1853 East 1600 Road, five minutes east of the east Lawrence Interstate 70 exit, next to the airport. Entrance is free with donations to the school appreciated but optional.

One highlight of the Winter Light Faire is the children’s puppet show performed by the school’s faculty with hand-made felted Waldorf puppets. Two showings will be offered at 3:30 and 4 p.m.

A new addition to this year’s faire is the online silent auction, featuring a variety of special items perfect for holiday gifts. The auction is now live and items are available for bidding at Prairie Moon Winter Light Faire 2025 Silent Online Auction until 7 p.m. Dec. 13, with three special in-person-only items available to bid on during the faire.

As the only Waldorf school in Kansas and one of the few in the Midwest, Prairie Moon Waldorf School offers a unique educational opportunity for children from preschool through eighth grade. Now more than ever, a nature-based, screen-free education is important to a child’s development. Waldorf education, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, emphasizes educating the “whole child” through a curriculum that promotes a balance of physical, mental and spiritual well-being in students.

Prairie Moon also offers an ongoing “Sweet Peas Garden” parent-child class on Fridays for infants and toddlers (ages birth-3), which provides community playtime for young children and a joyful, supportive break from the routine of the work week for their caregivers. More information about the upcoming sessions, which begin in January, is at prairiemoon.org/events. The school also offers summer camps for younger children.
