Post updated at 8:29 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11:

The Lawrence Holiday Farmers Market will return Saturday, and this year, the market is offering anyone in need a hand up through Double Up Protein Bucks.

The market is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Indoor Arena, 1930 Harper St. (It has typically been held in the Outdoor Pavilion, which was the plan this year, but the market announced Thursday morning that the event will move inside because of quite chilly temperatures in the forecast.)

More than 50 regular Lawrence Farmers Market vendors will participate in the annual holiday tradition and “showcase a ‘craftier’ side of themselves,” according to organizers.

“Our Vendors bring custom woodworks, creative kits, specialty treats, gift baskets, beautiful house plants, local winter produce, and hot food & drinks to sustain the serious Holiday shoppers,” according to the market’s website. “Customers can spend the day shopping, eating, and mingling in our open-air, covered Holiday Farmers Market.”

Anyone in need — with or without SNAP benefits or an EBT card — can go to the Market Info Booth to receive $25 worth of Double Up Protein Bucks, tokens used to buy eligible proteins from vendors. There is no income verification necessary, and the tokens are available thanks to community donors. Read more about the program in this article.

From April through September, the market gave out almost $12,500 in Double Up Protein Bucks, saw 79 new SNAP customers shopping at the market and served a record-breaking 34 SNAP customers on one weekend in July, according to stats the market recently shared.

The market would remind those who plan to attend that 19th Street is closed to traffic from Haskell Avenue to Harper Street. Organizers recommend taking 15th Street or 23rd Street to get to the fairgrounds from the west.

The Lawrence Farmers Market is still seeking to establish a permanent location for its weekly Saturday markets in downtown Lawrence.

In addition to the top three sites under consideration, the market is now considering South Park.

“Many community members asked for us to explore this site location as a part of our search for a permanent location, so we are working on exploring where in the park we think a farmers market would work best,” according to a recent newsletter.

Read more about the three other proposed sites in this article.
