An upcoming exhibition at the Watkins Museum of History will look at 50 years of growth and impact at the Hall Center for the Humanities, a research center at the University of Kansas.

The exhibition will be open in the Watkins’ Community Gallery from Friday, Jan. 16 through Saturday, March 14.

The museum is always free to visitors and is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays at 1047 Massachusetts St.

The Hall Center was formed as the Center for Humanistic Studies in 1976 and has changed physical locations several times, according to a news release from the museum.

“The exhibition features historical documents and photographs from the collections of the Hall Center and the Kenneth Spencer Research Library at KU,” according to the release.

For example, the display will include blueprints of the center’s current location — the 1887 Boiler House, also known as the “Old Powerhouse” — and imagery of publications and directors.

The university announced that it would renovate the building in 2002 thanks to gifts from the Hall Family Foundation and a campaign by the Historic Mount Oread Fund Preservation group. “For five decades, the Hall Center has fostered the creation and sharing of knowledge from humanistic perspectives, such as the study of history, philosophy, literature, art, religion, and languages,” current center Director Giselle Anatol said in the release. “… This gallery both honors the work of those who strove to ensure the Hall Center’s successes and invites members of our Lawrence community to join us in future conversations and endeavors.”

The Hall Center and the Watkins will co-host a free public reception for the exhibition with hors d’oeuvres and nonalcoholic drinks. The reception will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21 at the museum. Learn more at this link.
