The Lawrence Public Library will celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a lineup of family-friendly events, free lunch and a food drive.
The following scheduled programming is set for MLK Day this year — Monday, Jan. 19 — at the library, 707 Vermont St.:
• Barry Washboard Barnes, Lawrence poet and musician, will lead storytime at 10:30 a.m. in the auditorium.
• Attendees can then head over to Readers’ Theater in the children’s area to work on an MLK Day craft from 11:15 a.m. to noon.
• For the third year in a row, local business Taco Zone will provide a free taco bar lunch, set for noon to 1 p.m. in the auditorium. During the community meal, Alex Kimball Williams, Lawrence musician and co-founder of B.L.A.C.K. Lawrence, will give a musical performance on the synthesizer.
• Finally, B.L.A.C.K. Lawrence will facilitate a workshop to create blackout poetry from 1 to 2 p.m. in the auditorium.
Folks can bring donations for Just Food, the Douglas County food bank, to the library auditorium between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday. Organizers hope to fill three barrels of nonperishable pantry items.
Demetrius Kemp, Free State High School security guard and community volunteer, is the emcee for the day. Members of the youth-based arts organization Van Go’s Arts Train program will volunteer throughout the day.
All events are free to attend and open to all ages. The event webpage says registration is appreciated but not required. Register on the library’s website at this link.
