KU Memorial Unions have announced a renovation to the level four lobby and Jayhawk Ink space in the Kansas Union will include a WWI memorial, moveable furniture and a TV for game days.
“The renovations are designed to elevate both daily use and encourage special gatherings while honoring University of Kansas traditions and history,” according to a KU news release.
The level four lobby will have new floors, updated ceiling coves, a new fireplace and a long community table. The design team, Overland Park-based Dimensional Innovations, will also revise the look of the CoffeeHouse and lounge area. For example, the lounge area will have a media wall with a projector screen and moving furniture to fit groups of various sizes.
The lobby will also host a memorial wall honoring the 130 Jayhawks who died during World War I. Each student or alumni will have a photo on the wall where the community can pay their respects, according to Jack Kredo, executive director of the KU Memorial Unions.
Kredo said they intend to make Jayhawk Ink on level two a game day watch spot by adding a media wall with a 90-inch TV and an accent wall with an acrylic Jayhawk.
Jayhawk Ink can be booked through KU Memorial Unions event services here.
According to Kredo, the renovations will help create a welcoming environment for the KU community to connect.
“We hope that with these new updates, our Jayhawk community will feel a stronger sense of connection each time they enter our facilities,” he said. “The union is very much the heart and soul of our university, and we want each and every person who enters to feel right at home.”
Funds for the renovations come from student fees allocated by KU Student Senate. Kredo said the construction will cause minimal disruption.
KU will provide updates on the renovation on its website here.
