As a city planning team works to complete the Lawrence Loop of connected trails, the Bike Plan Steering Committee will solicit feedback from community members in an open house.
Once complete, the loop will be 22 miles of paved, connected trails with a greenway of protected recreational land.
City commissioners allocated funds to complete the loop when they approved the 2026 budget and 2026-2030 capital improvement plan, per the Lawrence Loop website.
As part of that plan, the city intends to construct a pedestrian bridge across Iowa Street in 2027. Other incomplete sections of the loop include the downtown portion from Seventh Street to Constant Park, Queens Road to Kasold Drive, and Michigan Street to Sandra Shaw.
The city established the Bike Plan Update Steering Committee in 2024 to work on an updated cycling safety plan, including an outline to complete the loop, in collaboration with the Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization.
Committee members are hosting a public open house from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2 in the Lawrence Public Library auditorium, 707 Vermont St.
“This phase invites the public to share input on specific segments identified for consideration as part of closing Loop gaps,” according to a city news release.
People can provide written feedback through this comment form, open through Tuesday, Feb. 3.
