The Douglas County treasurer’s office will close its public-facing services in the historic courthouse downtown after this week and move all operations to the satellite location on Sixth Street.

The county announced the plans last month. The public-facing office inside the historic courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St., will close at 5 p.m. Friday “as part of an effort to consolidate operations and improve customer service.” It will still be used for internal functions.

The satellite office, which opened in October 2024, is at 2601 W. Sixth St., on the south side of Sixth Street between Schwarz Road and Crestline Drive. Some county staff members put out banners to make the location easy to spot.

Starting at 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, all motor vehicle and real estate transactions in Lawrence will be handled only at the Sixth Street office.

“The Sixth Street location offers a larger waiting area, free close parking and a single level entrance without steps,” according to the release. “A new greeter will assist customers by reviewing paperwork to ensure they have the documents needed to complete their transactions, similar to the process used by the Kansas Division of Vehicles.”

Dropboxes will still be available outside both locations. There are also online options to renew motor vehicle tags, at this link, and to pay property taxes, at this link. Renewals and payments can also be mailed.

The treasurer’s office will continue operating its Baldwin City location during the second full week of each month at Baldwin City Market, 112 Eighth St., according to the release.

The office closed a previous satellite location at 2000 W. 31st St. after the Sixth Street office opened.
