An upcoming environmental film festival in Lawrence will support Friends of the Kaw while encouraging viewers to advocate for the Kansas River.
Since 2003, the Wild & Scenic Film Festival has taken place annually in Nevada City and Grass Valley, California before showing at flagship locations around the country. This will be the 17th year that Friends of the Kaw, a grassroots organization focused on protecting and preserving the Kansas River, has hosted a screening in Lawrence.
This year’s showing will feature eight short films with an approximate 2-1/2-hour runtime.
“A fundraiser for Friends of the Kaw, the proceeds from the event support their work to protect, advocate for and discover the Kansas River, the largest prairie-based river system in the world and the drinking water source for over 950,000 Kansans,” according to a news release.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the showing starts at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27 in the main theatre at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St. People can buy tickets online at this link for $24 until an hour before the show. At that point, tickets will only be available in person at the Liberty Hall box office.
Friends of the Kaw has a limited supply of free education tickets, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Students and teachers can request tickets by emailing info@kansasriver.org.
Per the release, there will be door prizes, and Friends of the Kaw members can enter a raffle for a Perception Conduit 13 sit-in kayak.
