Douglas County Emergency Management will soon host a workshop to help local businesses, communications workers and event organizers to prepare for extreme heat around the World Cup.
The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, March 9 in the Flory Meeting Hall at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2120 Harper St. Registration is open through Wednesday, March 4 at this link.
As Kansas City prepares to host World Cup games, Lawrence and Douglas County are bracing for an influx of tourists and a team from Algeria that selected Rock Chalk Park as its base camp.
“With thousands of visitors expected in our community for World Cup events this summer, we want to make sure local organizations feel confident and prepared,” Deputy Emergency Management Director John Stipetich said in a news release. “Extreme heat is something we can plan for, and this workshop gives businesses and event organizers practical steps to keep residents and visitors safe when temperatures rise.”
In addition to helping folks prevent heat-related illnesses, the workshop aims to lighten the load on first responders and local health care workers.
The event will include a panel discussion and group conversations where participants will brainstorm what to do in potential scenarios. Participants will discuss managing safe outdoor events, safety for customers and staff in retail and hospitality, and effective communication.
