The City of Lawrence’s compost facility is set to open for the season on Saturday, March 7.
The facility, at 1420 E. 11th St., will open for the first self-load Saturday event of the year from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering compost and woodchips from locally collected yard waste.
“If you’re getting your yard ready for spring, this is one of the easiest ways to stock up and give your garden a boost,” according to a social media post from the city.
The facility is typically open most Saturdays from March through December, though it may close or hours may change because of weather or other circumstances.
Self-loaded compost and woodchips are available only for Lawrence residents, and proof of residency will be required. Residents can also drop off yard waste at the facility; see guidelines on the city website that’s linked below.
The compost facility accepts cash only for payment, and only bills up to $20. Quantities up to 20 gallons are free; otherwise, self-loaded compost and woodchips cost $10 per truckload.
City-load events will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays April 4, May 2, June 6 and Oct. 3. Compost is $15 per scoop on those days, and self-loading will not be allowed. The April 4 event is open only to Lawrence residents, but the other dates are open to everyone.
The facility is set to be closed on Saturdays June 20, July 4, Nov. 28, Dec. 19 and Dec. 26 this year.
