Folks ages 16 and older can now get free, one-on-one tutoring sessions to improve their literacy skills through the Lawrence Public Library.

“Asking for help with reading is a hard thing to do, a brave thing to do,” Liz Stuewe, adult education specialist for the library, said in a news release. “I want to build a program that makes everyone feel welcome. Our tutors are kind, fun, and ready to help our community learn.”

Tutors are specially trained library volunteers. They can help people fluent in English develop their reading and writing skills, or act as a trained conversation partner for folks learning the language. Each lesson is tailored to a student’s goals and skills, according to the release.

Tutoring will take place at the library, 707 Vermont St., during any hours of operation. The library is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays through Sundays.

“We want to nurture a supportive environment, too,” said Heather Kearns, the library’s marketing and communications coordiantor. “It’s real help from caring tutors in a welcoming, casual, place.”

Stuewe said that promoting adult literacy has a ripple effect on community well-being, including the lives of children.

“(As) noted by ProLiteracy, a mother’s reading skill is the greatest determinant of her children’s future academic success, outweighing other factors, such as neighborhood and family income,” Stuewe said.
