The City of Lawrence believes around 5,000 customers received copies of other people’s print utility bills dated March 16. Here’s how to get the correct bill, according to the city.
The problem only affected people who received print bills dated March 16. Inaccurate bills have different names and addresses at the top, the city wrote in a news release.
“The City of Lawrence is working with our bill print vendor to investigate and resolve the issue, and we anticipate getting corrected bills printed and mailed this week,” the release reads.
Folks can view their correct bills at utilitybilling.lawrenceks.gov, as all information in the online customer portal should be correct. The error will not affect auto payments, as those rely on the online portal.

“While the incorrect utility bills included customer name, account number, and bill amount information, that is not enough for people unaffiliated with the customer’s account to gain access to it,” the release says. “Please be assured your utility billing account is secure.”
City staff members only release account information to customers who can provide the Social Security number or tax ID on file for the account, which is not included on print bills. Likewise, the print copies don’t include the email addresses and passwords needed to access online accounts.
Folks who want to create an online account to view correct bills can do so at this link. Those who don’t have an online account can email the utility billing team at utilitybilling@lawrenceks.gov to receive an accurate bill before it is mailed out. People can also reach out to that email with general questions or concerns.
“Please note that we are experiencing a high call volume due to this issue and email is the quickest way to get in touch with our team,” per the release.
People who do need to call can reach the utility billing team at 785-832-7878.
