An upcoming public health event will examine why racial inequities persist in birth outcomes in Douglas County and how the community can help.
“In Douglas County, Black non-Hispanic infants experience low birth weight, preterm birth, and infant mortality at significantly higher rates than other infants,” according to a news release from event organizers.
“Public Health After Dark is designed to educate the community about this reality and to spark meaningful dialogue about disparities and the systems, policies, and lived experiences that shape them,” the release continued.
The event is set for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16 at the Community Health Facility, 200 Maine St. It’s free to attend and open to the public.
Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health, LMH Health, LiveWell Douglas County and the Early Childhood Collective are co-hosting the event.
“Participants will explore accessible, visually engaging data on maternal and infant health, alongside community stories and insights that bring the numbers to life,” according to the release. “Through facilitated small-group discussions and interactive activities, the event will create space to reflect on what the data reveal, why inequities persist, and how community strengths can be mobilized to support healthier pregnancies and births for all families.”
Previous Public Health After Dark events have focused on violence and prevention and substance use and overdoses.
