Lawrence Humane Pet of the Week: Pup cup fiend Miley is ready to be a KU tour guide

Pet of the Week puts a spotlight on a furry friend who is available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society at the time of the article’s publication. According to ASPCA, dog adoption numbers are down nationwide, which adds additional strain on shelters that are already struggling to accommodate high volumes of animals. Lawrence Humane is no exception.

Through Pet of the Week, readers can learn about a pup before they visit the shelter. The featured furball is selected by shelter staff members, who provide all details on the animal’s personality and history.

Miley, a 5-year-old shelter pup, is about to be Lawrence’s new favorite University of Kansas tour guide.

Miley was a stray in Eudora who transferred to Lawrence two weeks ago. Although that is a short waiting time compared to other Pet of the Week stars, staff members are surprised that her cuteness and sweet nature haven’t won her more adoption attention.

Shelter staff members say that Miley is a 68-pound Labrador/Pyrenees mix, but she contains genomic mysteries waiting to be unraveled.

“(In) person she looks like she could even be a Golden Retriever mix,” wrote Elina Alterman, chief development officer for the shelter. “So I hope whoever adopts her does a DNA test and lets us know the results!”

Since moving to Lawrence, Miley has become a connoisseur of the finer pup cups around town while on Mass Street Mutts outings. Thus far, she has sampled locales such as Starbucks and 151 Coffee.

“She hasn’t yet revealed which one is best as more taste testing is required,” Alterman said.

Miley has some solid training under her fluffy belt as a KU tour guide after taking enough walks on campus. When other dogs have approached her on outings, she’s demonstrated the appropriate decorum on sniffing and allowing sniffs before losing interest.

Though she isn’t interested in interacting with other dogs, she does gobble up human attention.

Lexi Link, an LHS adoption counselor, said of Miley, “She is so sweet! She is a major cuddle bug and will do literally anything for attention and affection! She likes rope toys, but will get distracted after a bit and start asking for cuddles again!”

Miley isn’t a fan of cats and would be content to be the only dog in the home due to her discerning tastes. She needs to meet any potential doggy siblings. Mass Street Mutts volunteers have reported that she’d thrive in a home with children to dote on.

Miley is spayed, microchipped and vaccinated. Her adoption fee is $150.
