A 35-year-old woman is dead from an apparent stabbing in Lawrence, according to police.

Police had not released the woman’s name as of an afternoon update, but wrote that “The victim is also a Lawrence resident and knew the suspect.”

Lawrence police were called to the former VFW building in the 1800 block of Massachusetts Street at 7:22 a.m. Friday, where they found the woman behind the building.

“She appeared to have been stabbed multiple times,” according to police.

Police arrested 63-year-old Aaron Blake Wright, of Lawrence, in connection with the homicide. He will be booked into the Douglas County jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, police said.

Police identified Wright as a person of interest after witness interviews at the scene, according to an afternoon update from the police department.

“They located him shortly thereafter and transported him to police headquarters for questioning,” according to police. “After conducting an interview, detectives placed Wright under arrest.”

The Douglas County district attorney’s office will consider charging Wright once investigators complete and submit an affidavit.

“The investigation remains ongoing,” they said.

All arrestees and defendants in criminal cases should be presumed not guilty unless they are convicted.

The woman’s death is the second homicide in Lawrence so far this year; the first was in July, when Javien Hardin was shot and killed.

In 2024, Douglas County had six homicides — Crystal White, Davin Kerr, Vincent Walker, Christopher Lickteig and Isaiah Neal, all of Lawrence, and Nicole Eaton, of Eudora.
