Lawrence Transit is considering adding a $3 fare for use of its on-demand service as federal grants the city has received in the past are going to expire next year.
With the $3 fare implemented for on-demand service, the buses on city and university routes would remain free to ride, as would paratransit service, according to a city news release on Monday.
The city is conducting an online survey to garner feedback on the proposal. That can be found at this link, and it will be open through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2.
On average, 8% of the city’s scheduled on-demand trips — about 386 trips per month — are no-shows, according to the release.
“These no-shows represent trips that could have served other riders,” according to the release. “It is projected that returning fares to this service will provide a more consistent rider experience and improve trip availability.”
The Connected City Advisory Board will hear a presentation on the proposal on Oct. 20 and vote on it on Nov. 17.
“If approved, fares are expected to go into effect in 2026 and will be collected through the Lawrence Transit On Demand app or web portal,” according to the release.
