Lawrence Humane Pet of the Week: Unflappable brindle shepherd mix Cardi B. is not the drama

Pet of the Week puts a spotlight on a furry friend who is available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society at the time of the article’s publication. According to ASPCA, dog adoption numbers are down nationwide, which adds additional strain on shelters that are already struggling to accommodate high volumes of animals. Lawrence Humane is no exception.

Through Pet of the Week, readers can learn about a pup before they visit the shelter. The featured furball is selected by shelter staff members, who provide all details on the animal’s personality and history.

Unlike her namesake, the 3-year-old brindle shepherd mix Cardi B. doesn’t have to ask if she’s the drama.

Cardi B. was immersed in the typically unforgiving middle school environment for a few days as a school dog at Bishop Seabury Academy. Even as a younger dog in the hotbed of preteen chaos, she was unflappable.

“(That’s) wild!” LHS Chief Development Officer Elina Alterman wrote via email. “She went into classrooms and offered some joy and lightness as students got ready for finals. They got to relax by petting her and loving on her and she looooved it.”

Alterman said Cardi B. would be perfect for a family with kids, but she’s been waiting in the shelter for six months after being checked in as a stray in June.

“She truly is such an incredible dog and no one can figure out why she hasn’t been adopted yet,” Alterman wrote. “Not to promote violence, but people should be fist fighting over her!”

Mass Street Mutts volunteers who have taken Cardi B. on adventures call her serene, gorgeous, affectionate and mellow. She’s won a five-star score from all of the judges on her leash-walking and car-riding skills.

If there’s one thing she does share with her namesake, it’s endless talent. Cardi B. is a primo hiker, snuggler, study buddy and even has an impressive reindeer cosplay for the holidays.

Cardi B. is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $150.

Pet of the Week stars and where they are now

These Pet of the Week stars have taken to new stages recently:

A lucky household has claimed the previous Pet of the Week, snow queen La Croix.
Spray cheese-loving Ricky Ricardo‘s long-term tenure at the shelter has finally been ended with a loving adoption.
Someone has finally gobbled up Hamburger Mary‘s puppy cuteness, and she’s gone to her forever home.

These furry friends could use a foster home while waiting for adoption:

• Brutus, valiant protector of small children, is no longer in a foster home. The shelter staff say they really need to find him a foster home or adopter.
Eanid is at the shelter and ready to meet her foster or forever Wednesday Addams.
Flycatcher, the shepherd mix who lives up to his name, is waiting to be adopted. The shelter would love to find a foster for him in the meantime.
Ruby and her speckled tongue are waiting for a foster home or adopter.

These pups are living it up in foster care and hope to find their forever families soon:

Snoozy Susie is waiting for an adopter who she can take naps alongside forevermore. As of publication time, people can meet her in the shelter while her foster is out of town.
Kiba has been thriving in foster care, where he is waiting for an adopter.

Those interested in adopting Cardi B. can email the Lawrence Humane Society’s adoptions team at adoptions@lawrencehumane.org or call 785-843-6835.

People can also go straight to the shelter at 1805 E. 19th St. to meet her. The Humane Society is open to potential adopters from noon to 6 p.m. every day. People can also sign up for the Mass Street Mutts program to get to a know a dog before adopting.

Potential foster parents can email the Foster Coordinator at foster@lawrencehumane.org and fill out an application here. The Lawrence Humane Society provides foster parents with all necessary supplies and food, and they cover bills for medical care, behavioral support and more.
