Pet of the Week puts a spotlight on a furry friend who is available for adoption at the Lawrence Humane Society at the time of the article’s publication. According to ASPCA, dog adoption numbers are down nationwide, which adds additional strain on shelters that are already struggling to accommodate high volumes of animals. Lawrence Humane is no exception.
Through Pet of the Week, readers can learn about a pup before they visit the shelter. The featured furball is selected by shelter staff members, who provide all details on the animal’s personality and history.
“Adzuki” refers to red beans and red mung beans, or an equally sweet senior pit bull who would thrive in a home with other dogs.
In fact, his foster parent thinks he’d do best in a home with other dogs, even if they get under his skin — or fur.
“He is not a fan of my sister’s super high energy young dog, but gives her space and they are able to be around each other,” the foster parent said. “He adores my dog — he even mirrors him on walks, gives him kisses and nuzzles when he walks by him when they are outside and has even laid on top of him.”

Since Adzuki can get spooked at first, he does need to meet any potential doggy siblings. Shelter staff can help orchestrate that first interaction for interested adopters.

This 8-year-old, 70-pound pup came to the humane society as a stray in July and was never claimed. Although he’s getting up there in age, he’s fit as a fiddle, which leads shelter staff to believe he has many good years ahead of him.
Adzuki can get his play on — and he certainly gets excited at the prospect of a walk — but he’s quick to tire out and turn to his favorite pastimes: lazing on the couch, sunbathing and a good nap.

There’s no training needed with this older dog, who can be left alone at home. He is superb on the leash and adores a front-seat car ride.
Adzuki is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. His adoption fee is $75.

As Adzuki is in foster care, interested adopters can arrange a meeting by emailing LHS’s adoptions team at adoptions@lawrencehumane.org or by calling 785-843-6835.
Pet of the Week stars and where they are now
Last week’s senior star, Coco, has been adopted into a loving, stairless home that’s perfect for her older joints.
These furry friends could use a foster home while waiting for adoption:
• Brutus, valiant protector of small children, is no longer in a foster home. The shelter staff say they really need to find him a foster home or adopter.
• Unflappable Cardi B. is not the drama — she wants to be someone’s peace, be it a foster parent or an adopter.
• Snoozy Susie is waiting for an adopter who she can take naps alongside forevermore, but she’d still appreciate a foster parent in the meantime.
• Eanid is at the shelter and ready to meet her foster or forever Wednesday Addams.
• Flycatcher, the shepherd mix who lives up to his name, is waiting to be adopted. The shelter would love to find a foster for him in the meantime.
• Ruby and her speckled tongue are waiting for a foster home or adopter.
These pups are living it up in foster care and hope to find their forever families soon:
• Kiba has been thriving in foster care, where he is waiting for an adopter.
Bonus: More Adzuki cuteness
