Empire Bar & Billiards announced Wednesday that the pool hall will move locations this week, and its old spot will host a new mystery concept.
“Historically, we’ve held a big New Year bash, often accompanied by a tournament and a Champaign toast,” one of the business’s Facebook posts reads. “But as you all know if you’ve been following us at all, we have a good reason to delay our celebrations for a short bit.”
The post goes on to say that the billiards hall is being uprooted from its home of a decade at 925 Iowa St. and settling into a new spot at 1527 W. Sixth St.
Empire is open until 2 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1 as a final hurrah at the Iowa Street location. The business will celebrate the soft opening of the new Sixth Street location starting at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2.

In another Facebook post, Empire said its longtime pool tables were moved to the new building. They were leveled during installation and given fresh felt.
According to the post, pool leagues will continue as planned at the new location with Lawrence’s American Pool Association Masters. Three matchups will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2.
Empire’s former roost along Iowa Street will be repurposed by the owner with a new, undisclosed concept.
The post says that the old building’s doors won’t open until late January, when “it will have undergone some changes, along with a rebrand, and will have its own dedicated social media pages and a new focus.”
The owner of Empire could not be reached Wednesday for comment.
