Local community organizations and vendors will host opportunities the next two weekends to grow your seed collection and learn more about gardening.
Lawrence community members can get a head start on their gardens with these upcoming events:
• Seed Library: The Lawrence Public Library’s Seed Library will open for the season at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7. All community members are welcome to take home six seed packets at no charge.
Flower, vegetable, herb, and fruit seeds will be available, as well as the seeds of native plant species from Native Lands Restoration Collaborative. Planting instructions are included with the seed packets, and the Ask Desk will be available for questions. The library invites donations of seed packets or labeled donations with species and date harvested as well.
The Seed Library inside LPL, 707 Vermont St., will remain open until the end of April. Learn more and find more gardening resources at lplks.org/seed-library.
• Kaw Valley Seed Fair: Local vendors and artisans will gather for the 17th annual seed fair from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 in Building 21 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Attendees can learn more about sustainability and biodiversity from community experts and take part in a seed exchange.
To participate in the exchange, bring pre-packaged seeds or saved seeds in envelopes, although envelopes are usually available at the event. If you do not have seeds to share, you can participate in the exchange by making a Venmo donation.
