Free local helpers and resources are available to help Lawrencians navigate the 2026 tax season, including services intended for older people and Spanish speakers.

Here are some options.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides free tax assistance and preparation services with a focus, but not exclusively, on serving taxpayers ages 50 and older who have low to moderate income.

Those who need in-person services can schedule a tax-aide appointment in person. The Lawrence location is the First Baptist Church at 1330 Kasold Drive.

Appointments are available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Filers can call 785-691-9737 to set up an appointment.

Other tax-aide appointment locations are available in other nearby cities. More information, necessary documentation and steps to take before appointments can be found at taxaide.aarpfoundation.org

AARP also offers a free online tax filing software, and during this process, filers can request help from a volunteer counselor to coach them through the filing process using screen-sharing on their computer. Access to free software is limited to taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less.

The closest AARP Tax-Aide location that offers services in Spanish is at the Community Resources Council in Topeka at 455 SE Golf Park Blvd. Filers can call 785-233-1365 to set up an appointment at the Topeka location. Appointments are available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Somos Lawrence

Somos Lawrence is offering free tax assistance services to Spanish speakers by appointment. Appointments are available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, March 14 and March 28.

Somos Lawrence requests that those who wish to set up an appointment or who need more information call 785-813-1098. If the call is not answered, leave a message with your name and number, and Somos Lawrence will return the call.

KU Law VITA Program

The KU Law Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program run by law students provides free federal and state tax preparation services on a first-come, first-served basis. Taxpayers who qualify for this service make less than $67,000 a year and must not itemize deductions.

Sessions run through April 15. However, there will be no sessions during KU’s spring break, March 16-22.

Session times are as follows:

  • Monday and Wednesday sessions are held from 6 to 8:45 p.m. in the first floor library computer lab at Green Hall, 1535 W. 15th St.
  • Thursday sessions are held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority, 1600 Haskell Ave.
  • Saturday sessions are held from  9 to 11:45 a.m. in the first floor library computer lab at Green Hall.

The VITA program asks that those who need assistance bring proof of identification and all relevant documentation, including proof of income and expenditures. Those with questions about the program can contact vita@ku.edu for more information.
