“With the help of railroad employees, officers and paramedics were able to locate the female victim and attempted to render aid,” Lawrence police said in a news release Wednesday. However, Cassandra Rose Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.

Police said Anderson was from Lecompton. However, a family member told the Times that “Cassie” lived in Lecompton briefly, but she grew up in Lawrence and she had graduated from Lawrence High School. She just hadn’t updated her ID.

“She was loved,” the family member said. “She had a wonderful boyfriend and an amazing little boy.”

The incident doesn’t appear to be suspicious in nature, LPD said.

This is at least the second train-related fatality in Douglas County in 2021. In January, a woman was hit by a train near Second and Indiana streets and did not survive.

In June, an unoccupied vehicle was struck by a train east of Lawrence. There were no injuries in that incident.
