Just ahead of Halloween, the Free State Film Society will screen “Carnival of Souls,” a cult classic by Lawrence filmmaker Herk Harvey and written by John Clifford.

The film features familiar Lawrence locations. Keyboardist Jeff Stolz will set the stage with live music ahead of the screening.

University of Kansas Film and Media Professor Matt Jacobson will make opening remarks to dedicate the evening to Harvey and Oldfather Studios, which was recently demolished. (Read more about Oldfather’s backstory and its significance to the Lawrence film scene at this link.)

The plot of “Carnival of Souls”: “A young woman survives a drag race accident, then agrees to take a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City. En route, she is haunted by a bizarre apparition that compels her toward an abandoned lakeside pavilion,” according to the Film Society.

“Made by industrial filmmakers on a small budget, the eerily effective B-movie classic Carnival of Souls was intended to have ‘the look of a Bergman and the feel of a Cocteau’ — and, with its strikingly used locations and spooky organ score, it succeeds.”

Tickets are $10 for nonmembers of the Free State Film Society. Members attend for free. Buy tickets or find out how to become a film society member at this link.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28. Music starts at 7 and the screening begins at 7:30 at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St. Costumes are welcome.

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination status is required at the door for patrons ages 12 and up. See full protocols here.
