Residents have an opportunity to learn about weather safety and thunderstorm development during a Weather 101 class offered by Douglas County Emergency Management.

The department said in a news release that “Douglas County is at higher risk for severe weather” in the spring. That might include damaging winds, large hail, flooding and tornadoes.

“It’s up to each of us to know the right steps to take in order to ensure our safety when severe weather strikes,” said Jillian Rodrigue, deputy director of Emergency Management.

The free class will be offered from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 3 at the Flory Meeting Hall at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2120 Harper St.

Also in conjunction with Severe Weather Preparedness Month, Kansas officials will conduct a statewide tornado drill at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 8. Residents and businesses are encouraged to use the drill to test their own emergency plans.

Rodrigue also urged residents to sign up for severe weather and emergency evacuation alerts through the Northeast Kansas Regional Notification System at this link.
