Gov. Laura Kelly welcomed the University of Kansas men’s basketball team and coach Bill Self to the Statehouse Monday to recognize their success in the NCAA Tournament.
She proclaimed April 25, 2022 as “KU Men’s Basketball National Championship Victory Day.”
The proclamation itself (below) shares some of Kansas’ rich basketball history, including how the Jayhawks this season finished with a record of 34-6, another Big 12 tournament championship, and the team’s fourth NCAA tournament victory.
“It is my great pleasure to welcome the 2022 NCAA Champions, our very own Kansas Jayhawks, to the Statehouse,” Kelly said, according to a news release from her office.
“After an incredible season, we all saw this talented team’s grit, determination, and triumph, and I know it wasn’t easy. But, hours of practice, energy, and sacrifice paved the way for a remarkable season full of games that captivated a nation. The entire state of Kansas is so proud of these young men. They’ve brought great pride to Kansas – and so many young players across the state are looking up to them.”
The proclamation memorializes the Jayhawks’ historic comeback from a 15-point deficit at halftime to top the Tar Heels 72-69 on April 4.
“Whereas, the KU Men’s basketball team did ‘just load the wagon,'” Kelly encourages all Kansans to join in the observation and celebration of greatness.
