The Lied Center has announced its season lineup for 2022-23, and one feature will be the premiere of a musical theatre work that the center has commissioned.
NORTH: The Musical follows a family’s journey through the Underground Railroad, seeking freedom, according to the center’s news release. It is based on actual accounts of freedom-seekers.
“Their route through the Louisiana bayous, the bustling city of New Orleans and the young town of Lawrence, Kansas, introduces the characters and audience members to the diverse, multifaceted lives of Black Americans during the 1850s,” according to the release.
It will be the debut theatrical production of Ashli St. Armant, according to the Lied Center’s website.
Numerous other highlights of the lineup include The Beach Boys, Chanticleer, Mavis Staples, and Black Violin, plus national Broadway tours Hairspray, Anastasia, and a show that is still to be announced.
“As we continue to heal collectively, experiencing a live performance is the perfect way to remind ourselves of humanity’s resilience,” Derek Kwan, executive director of the Lied Center, said in the release. “My deepest gratitude goes out to our Friends of the Lied, whose steadfast support over the last two years has made it possible for us to continue thriving in service to the University of Kansas and entire community.”

Tickets are available now for Friends of the Lied, by phone and at the ticket office. Ticket packages go on sale to the public on May 23, and individual show tickets go on sale to the general public on Monday, June 6, by phone, at the ticket office and on the center’s website.
