The city will soon start two more construction projects that will require road closures over the next few months. Here are the details, according to city news releases:

19th and Alabama:

The intersection of 19th and Alabama streets will be closed starting Tuesday, July 5, through early August. That is part of a storm sewer improvement program.

After the intersection work is done, the contractor will start working on a new storm sewer under 19th Street from Arkansas Street (which is just east of Naismith Hall) to the west side of Alabama Street. 19th Street traffic will detour to 23rd Street while that is in progress.

That work is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Naismith Drive from 23rd to 24th streets:

Naismith Drive will be closed between 23rd and 24th streets starting Tuesday for an ongoing sanitary sewer project.

The work is expected to last six to eight weeks, putting the expected completion date in mid-to-late August.

The closure will affect Lawrence Transit’s northbound stops Nos. 39 and 41, and southbound stop No. 40. “Northbound and southbound passengers are recommended to go to the stop at 24th & Ousdahl during the ongoing construction work,” according to the city.

In addition, work has recently begun on East 23rd Street, and the New Hampshire Street parking garage will be closed for work beginning Tuesday.

The city encourages motorists to avoid the areas during construction work, expect delays, and use alternate routes whenever possible. Estimated completion dates are subject to weather and other potential delays.
