Lawrence community members rally, march for reproductive rights

Protesters rallied and marched in downtown Lawrence Saturday, calling for fellow Kansans to vote “no” to the constitutional amendment that could lead to a statewide abortion ban.

Currently, Kansans have a constitutionally protected right to abortion, despite Roe v. Wade being overturned. But the amendment, which proponents have labeled “Value them Both”, would take that right away and allow Kansas politicians to ban abortion, even in situations of rape or incest, or if a pregnancy is life-threatening.

Saturday’s rally was held just a few days before the deadline to register to vote, which is Tuesday, July 12 in order to cast a ballot on Aug. 2. Voters do not have to be affiliated with a party — unaffiliated and independent voters may vote on the amendment, too.

Voter registration is available at this link. You can also request an advance ballot to be mailed to you on the same website. Learn more about voting in Douglas County at this link.
