He served as artistic director of community theatre production featured in HBO true crime documentary series

Theatre Lawrence’s board of directors on Wednesday announced Jamie Ulmer as the new executive director. He will take over from the organization’s original founder.

Ulmer, of Beatrice, Nebraska, will officially assume his role on March 1, and he “he will manage not only the day-to-day operations of the theatre, but also all artistic endeavors as well,” according to a news release from Theatre Lawrence. He currently serves as the managing artistic director of Community Players in Beatrice, and he is on the board of directors of the American Association of Community Theatre.

“I am thrilled to be joining the team at Theatre Lawrence,” Ulmer said in the release. “I look forward to getting to know the community and continuing the legacy of impactful, quality programming that the theatre is known for.”

In his current role, he was involved in the production of “Gage County, NE,” a play drawn from court transcripts that shines light on the wrongful convictions of six people connected to one murder. The controversial case and the production of the play were featured in a recent HBO documentary, “Mind Over Murder.”

“We went through a long, thoughtful process before deciding to participate,” Ulmer told American Theatre in a July article. “It came down to the fact that this is a story about our community, and who should be telling our story but us?”

In addition, Ulmer is vice president of legislative affairs for Nebraskans for the Arts, a charter member of the Lincoln Theatre Alliance, and has been an adjunct theatre instructor at Southeast Community College in Beatrice and at Doane University in Crete, Nebraska, according to the release.

Ulmer succeeds Mary Doveton, who founded the organization in the late 1970’s and has served as its only executive director. She will continue in her position through the transition, according to the release.
