Lawrence is celebrating Sunday night after the Kansas City football team became Super Bowl champions for the second time in four years.
Harrison Butker kicked the game-winning field goal for Kansas City to win 38-35. It was an ending not befitting a dramatic game in which both KC and the Philadelphia Eagles played intensely, but it was just enough.
Kansas City has gone to three Super Bowls in four years, topping San Francisco 31-20 in 2020 and falling to Tampa Bay 31-9 in 2021.
In Lawrence, revelers flooded Massachusetts Street — and climbed some trees — in celebration.

21-year-olds Emma Kneller, left, and Katelyn Muehlberger of Overland Park groaned as the Eagles intercepted a pass. Jazzhaus was full of alternating whoops of joy and disappointed shouts as the two teams went head-to-head in the first quarter.
The Red Lyon Tavern was flooded with Lawrencians decked out in KC football apparel.
28-year-old Grant Taylor-Ahlvers, of Lawrence, roared with joy when Kansas City scored.
Jairo E. Omido, a 38-year-old from Wichita and the only green jersey in a sea of red, wasn’t as enthused.
“I’ve gotten a lot of hate tonight, and I have called my mom,” Omido said.
Fans gathered outside of the Red Lyon cheered as KC gained another few yards in the second quarter.
Nearly every table was full in all downtown restaurants with a TV Sunday night. Rusty Taco was this group’s venue of choice.
