Douglas County residents can safely dispose of expired and unneeded prescription and over-the-counter medications at the sheriff’s office’s collection site on National Drug Take Back Day.

The drive-thru dropoff site will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 22 in the parking lot outside the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St. Students from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy will be on hand to help, too.

“The goal behind National Drug Take Back Day is to provide a safe disposal of unneeded medications from homes to prevent mediation misuse or opioid addiction, for example,” according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. “Proper disposal can also eliminate improper environmental disposal into the water supply.”

The dropoff site is free, anonymous and open to the public.

Veterinary drugs are also accepted, according to the release, but DGSO cannot accept needles, sharps or inhalers.

“In the most recent National Drug Take Back Day in October 2022, 4,340 law enforcement agencies across the country participated and collected a total of 324 tons of unused or expired medication,” according to the release.

The Eudora and Baldwin City police departments are also participating in Drug Take Back Day.
