The Lawrence school district has named Zach Harwood interim principal of Lawrence Virtual School.

Harwood taught eighth grade science at Billy Mills Middle School from 2013-2019, and has since served as an assistant principal and athletic director for schools in Carbondale and Olathe, according to a Monday news release from the district. He has also served as the organizational excellence coordinator for Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center since 2022, according to the release.

“I am incredibly excited about and grateful for the opportunity to join the Lawrence Virtual School,” Harwood said in the release.

“The chance to work with students from across the state to reach their academic potential is a dream come true,” he continued. “I look forward to working with the amazing LVS staff to serve the needs of this unique and diverse community.”

Harwood replaces former principal Susan Cooper, who resigned to accept a position in the Topeka school district.

Harwood’s new position is effective immediately, pending school board approval, according to the release.
