Update, Sept. 13, 2023: 100-day closure of U.S. Highway 40 postponed until spring
Original post:
As part of the Kansas Highway 10 interchange project, a section of U.S. Highway 40 (West Sixth Street) will be closed for about 100 days, beginning Tuesday.
The Kansas Department of Transportation project will reconfigure the interchange into a diverging diamond and add a sidewalk with barriers for pedestrian protection.
“Phases I and II of the project will primarily take place west of the interchange, along U.S. 40 and East 900 Road. The current East 900 Road intersection tie-ins will close to allow room for the new interchange configuration,” according to a KDOT news release about the project. “The north intersection of East 900 Road will be relocated to the west of its current location. The southern intersection tie-in will be permanently closed, and a cul-de-sac will be constructed for local traffic.”
On Tuesday, Sept. 5, crews will close U.S. 40 to through traffic between East 800 and East 900 roads for the first phase of the project, according to a recent City of Lawrence traffic update.
Drivers will have access to K-10 from Lawrence during these phases but will not be able to travel west into the county past K-10, according to the update.
The closure is expected to last about 100 days — through mid-December — but it could be delayed by weather or other circumstances.
This map shows the approximate stretch of road that will be closed:
In the 2024 summer months, Phase III “will require a complete closure of the interchange when U.S. 40 and the K-10 ramps are reconfigured to create the diverging diamond layout,” according to the earlier KDOT release. “Motorists will be notified, and traffic information will be provided prior to the closures.”
