A local collective of Black artists is set to lead an interactive event with poetry and music, including an open mic, to celebrate Black storytelling.
B.L.A.C.K. (Black Literature and Arts Collective of Kansas) Lawrence will join the University of Kansas’ Spencer Museum of Art to host the multimedia experience, “Black writing with B.L.A.C.K. Lawrence,” according to a Facebook event page. The Lawrence community is invited to join.
The event is part of programming for the KU History of Black Writing’s 40th anniversary this year. An exhibition at the Spencer Museum, “Black Writing,” honors Black storytellers and celebrates the History of Black Writing program’s work. Some of B.L.A.C.K Lawrence’s performances and lessons will reference works showcased in the exhibit, the event page says.
Attendees are welcome to share their own work as part of an open mic, too. They’ll also be able to participate in a blackout poetry activity, which is taking a written piece of work and building on it to create a unique poem.
Featured B.L.A.C.K. Lawrence artists will include Barry Barnes, Alex Kimball Williams, Tai Amri Spann-Ryan and A.D. Boynton II.
“Black Writing with B.L.A.C.K. Lawrence” is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29 at Spencer Museum of Art, 1301 Mississippi St. in Lawrence. It’s free to attend.
