Young artists and entrepreneurs will be showcasing their talents at an upcoming vending event in Lawrence.

Youth will bring their original paintings, drawings, cosmetics, crocheted items, jewelry, baked goods and more to sell as part of Lit & Local, according to a Facebook event page. The event will also feature an open mic, where young musicians, vocalists, writers and other performers will be encouraged to share their talents with the community.

Lit & Local serves as a way to uplift Lawrence-Douglas County’s young people and celebrate their creativity.

It originated in 2018 with the Sunrise Project, a local nonprofit organization. The organization hosted the first one with the help of an R&B artist, Shah, who at the time had lived and gone to school in Lawrence but has since graduated and built a musical career in Kansas City and beyond. Members of the Sunrise Project have continued to help shape the event over the years.

Lit & Local is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5 at the Cider Gallery, 810 Pennsylvania St. in Lawrence. It’s free to attend, but community members are encouraged to purchase items from the market.

Performers interested in participating in the open mic will be able to sign up at any time during the event. Each person will have up to 10 minutes on stage. Youth between the ages of 12 and 18 are welcome to participate.

For questions, contact Melissa Freiburger, executive director of the Sunrise Project, via email at melissa@sunriseprojectks.org or by calling or texting 785-865-1618.
