Caro, MI

Jeffrey J. List, PhD of Bay City, formerly of Caro, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, November 3, 2023 at his home. Jeff was born December 18, 1972 in Bay City, the son of Diane R. (Dunn) List, PhD and the late Donald R. List, PhD. He graduated from Caro High School with the class of 1991 and continued his studies at Alma College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. He later earned his master’s degree and PhD in theater from Bowling Green State University and the University of Kansas, respectively.

Jeff had an innate love for the stage and found joy and purpose in the theatrical world for his entire adult life. He performed in and directed countless productions, most recently at Bay City Players in Bay City and the Pit & Balcony Theater in Saginaw. Beyond his artistic endeavors, he was a steadfast advocate for change and social justice. Jeff fearlessly lent his voice and time to various causes, tirelessly advocating for marginalized communities and fighting for the rights of those often unheard. Jeff was an avid sports fan, especially if his beloved Michigan Wolverines were playing, and enjoyed sitting with friends and family around board games. He was born with an insatiable curiosity and an extraordinary intellect, and anyone lucky enough to have Jeff as a member of their trivia team was almost certain to win. Beyond his encyclopedic mind, he was known for his sharp wit, kind heart and approachable demeanor. He was always ready to share his wealth of knowledge and engage in meaningful discussions, sparking intellectual debates and spreading joy through his unique blend of wisdom and humor.

Left to cherish Jeff’s memory are his mother, Dr. Diane List and her husband, William Abbey, of Bay City; sister, Jacqueline List-Houser and her husband, Troy Houser, of Caro; two nieces, Taylor Thompson and Alexia Houser of Caro; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and friends at Coonan’s Irish Hub in Bay City that he loved as family. Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Donald R. List; paternal grandparents, Richard & Eunice List; maternal grandparents, Wilfred & Ruth Dunn.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the List Family Fund at the Tuscola County Community Foundation.
