A hiker found an Overland Park man dead in a wooded area near Clinton Overlook Park Sunday evening. The man had been reported missing Tuesday.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office searched “numerous locations” Friday afternoon at Clinton State Park after David Kyle Kempker, 53, was reported missing by family members Tuesday night and Kempker’s vehicle was found Wednesday night at Clinton State Park.
“Kansas Search and Rescue provided K9 teams during the search. The Lawrence Police Department, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks game wardens and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff also assisted in the search,” according to a news release from DGSO on Friday.
Around 5:40 p.m. Sunday, a hiker called dispatch to report that he believed he saw a person in an area nearby the trail he was hiking, according to an update from DGSO on Monday morning.
“Deputies were unable to see anything from the trail, but once they entered the wooded area, they located a deceased person who matched the description of” Kempker, according to the release.
Deputies notified Kempker’s family on Sunday evening, according to the release.
The investigation was ongoing Monday. The coroner’s report was still pending, according to the release.
