DeWitt joined the district in 2013 as an assistant principal and athletic director at LHS, according to the release. In 2018, he began leading the district’s adult education services and alternative programming, and the delivery of educational services at the Northeast Regional Juvenile Detention Center, according to the release.

Among his roles prior to Lawrence Public Schools, DeWitt taught social studies and coached at Eudora for seven years, according to the release. He’s already assistant wrestling coach at Eudora Middle School, according to the Eudora school district.

“I am thankful for my 11 years working in USD 497 and appreciate the many dedicated educators I had the privilege to work with during that time,” DeWitt said in the release. “I am grateful to the many students and families who put their trust in me and our team to care for their educational experience.”

DeWitt’s resignation will be effective June 30, according to the release.

“Knowing that options are essential to meeting the varying needs of all students, Dr. DeWitt has a passion for providing alternative paths to education,” Superintendent Anthony Lewis said in the release. “His work with the staff at the Lawrence College & Career Academy, in particular, has been groundbreaking. They have helped students at risk of dropping out of school make connections, experience success, receive an education, and graduate college and career-ready.”
