Staff members of the Douglas County District Court’s Legal Self-Help office will offer help for folks involved in civil legal issues once a week at the Lawrence Public Library.
From 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, starting June 11, the office will provide information about court processes and available resources, according to a news release from the county.
“Access to the justice system is essential for a thriving community,” Legal Self-Help Director Brandy Nichols-Brajkovic said in the release. “We’re excited to expand our reach beyond traditional courthouse hours and locations, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate in the justice system and be heard.”
Help will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in Study Room 4 at the library, 707 Vermont St. There are no appointments.
Self-help office staff members can help with issues such as evictions and family law, technical assistance with finding legal forms, questions about legal processes and providing information to guide you through a court case. The office cannot help with criminal cases, including traffic violations.
“We know managing these circumstances can be stressful. The library and community partners are here to help you connect the dots,” according to a Facebook post from the library Monday morning.
The main self-help office is available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays on the main floor of the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, 111 E. 11th St. Additional help with evictions and collections is available from 8 to 9 a.m. on Fridays.
More information and further resources are available at dgcoks.gov/district-court/self-help.
Speaking with the office is not legal advice and it does not create an attorney-client relationship, according to the library, and “It is always best to seek the advice of a licensed attorney for legal advice and representation.”
