A Lawrence organization that offers kids free back-to-school haircuts has received a donation ahead of this year’s first annual Kids Expo.

The Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has donated $1,000 to Haven for Haircuts, an organization focused on underserved youth in Douglas County. Additionally, a member of the parade committee has matched that amount, according to a news release from the parade committee.

Since 2021, Haven for Haircuts has partnered with the Boys & Girls Club to provide free haircuts before school began.

This year, around 10 licensed hair stylists recruited by Haven for Haircuts will be giving free haircuts at the upcoming Kids Expo. The event, hosted by the Lawrence Schools Foundation, will also feature food, activities, music, inflatables, free school supplies and more.

“We are thrilled to be part of this event and look forward to helping these kids look and feel their best before the first day of school,” Haven for Haircuts founder Megan Lilly said in the release.

The parade committee’s $1,000 donation comes from the committee’s emergency fund set aside for community needs – the “Sully Fund,” named after a founding member, Bill Sullivan, according to the release. Local families, businesses and organizations are selected as beneficiaries after submitting applications.

The Kids Expo is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Lawrence school district offices, 110 McDonald Drive. It’s free to attend.
