Heat advisory in effect Wednesday in Lawrence; severe storms possible

Douglas County will be under a heat advisory from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, and the area could see severe storms Wednesday evening.

Heat index values could reach 108° across northeastern Kansas, according to the National Weather Service office in Topeka.

Some severe thunderstorms could also impact the area Wednesday evening, “with large hail, damaging wind gusts, and locally heavy rainfall being the main hazards,” according to NWS.

Additional strong to severe storms are possible Thursday, according to NWS.

For Lawrence, NWS forecasts a high near 94° and a 50% chance of showers and storms, mainly after 10 p.m., and a low temperature around 73° Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

As of Wednesday morning, Thursday was expected to see a high near 92°, and Friday was expected to be sunny with a high near 89°.
